RIP Berkley

Tuesday was a very sad day for us. We had to put our sweet dog, Berkley, to sleep. We had her for four years and we think she was 6 or 7 years old. We rescued her from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter in 2005 so that Buster would have a playmate. We fell in love with her instantly. She was the sweetest dog that loved to snuggle.

Sadly, when we adopted her she had heart worms. So, of course, we got her treated. Unfortunately I think that treatment was really hard on her. A few months later Berkley started having seizures. We were able to medicate her and keep the seizures under control. As the years rolled on, her seizures got worse and worse and more frequent. She also began urinating during her seizures. All of her training was basically gone and she just seemed out of it most of the time.

We toyed with the idea of putting her down before the boys arrived, and then I had to go on bed rest. Over the last few months we kept saying we needed to do it and then we would chicken out. We finally realized that Berkley's quality of life wasn't where it should be and that we were being selfish. It wasn't fair for her so suffer because we couldn't let go.

Berkley is in such a better place now and is nice and healthy. We loved her very much and our home isn't the same without her. We will always miss her.
